Benefits:

• The chance to hear other choirs. All choirs sit in the auditorium and listen to the other performances of that cluster.

Assessment
A highly qualified assessor in the choral field will give each choir a written assessment of their performance.
The assessment is based on the criteria listed below and choirs will be awarded either Gold, Silver or Bronze.

The criteria are based on the quality of performance, within the context of the difficulty of the repertoire selected and the level ( e.g. primary,secondary) of the individual choir.

Assessment is not based on a comparison with other ensembles.

Criteria is as follows: Sound Quality / Technical Elements / Musical Interpretation / Programming and Presentation.

The opinions and comments made by the assessor are their own personal opinions and are not necessarily those of the festival organizers.

Sections

Junior Primary (Grades 1-4)

Senior Primary (Grades 5-7) Primary choirs (Grade 3-7) are classified as Senior Primary

Each section is broken into clusters of four to five choirs with assessment and awards presented after that cluster’s performance. The advantage of this is that the students can hear other choirs perform, making this an educational experience. The maximum time for each cluster, including time for presentations, is 1 to 1.5 hours.

Performance

Choirs present two contrasting works of their own choice.
Each choir has a strict duration of five minutes.

Minimum number of performers is fifteen. maximum: unlimited
Showcase section allows for creativity, choreography, movement and costume.
Music scores copies for the assessor must be submitted upon arrival to the Coordinator.

Accompanist: This is the responsibility of the choral director to provide, however a C D player is allowed. You have the option of bring your own equipment or using the house P A. If it is the latter you need to notify the Coordinator on the entry form.

Performance dates are as follows:
Middle and Secondary School: Tuesday 20th July 2010 (Times TBA)
Primary School: Saturday 24th July 2010 (Times TBA)

Choir members performing:   FREE Admission

Adults: $8.00         Concession: $6.00        Children under age 13: FREE

Entries:

All entries must reach the Coordinator by Friday 9th July 2010

A. There are a couple of reasons for holding it on a weekend.

Firstly,  parents are able to attend and see their own children  perform and  also listen to other choirs.  This all happens in a very short period of about one and a half  hours,  not half a day.

Secondly,  costs.  The need  for  a bus,  which could be a cost to the parents. The cost to the school to have a replacement teacher  take the classes missed by the regular music teacher. That cost can be huge!

So weekends maybe don’t look so good at first glance, but, as you can see, they are much more beneficial to all parties concerned.

(The second comment made  with regard to costs came from a  Choral Director who was in our recent Festival and spoke of her  experience).

I hope this answers your question.

A. We would suggest you go into the Senior Primary as that would be the best for your situation.

A. No, not at all. The important thing is that those students get to see and hear other choirs and can learn for the experience. Remember,  it’s not a competition.

The assessor will be listening to the quality of the performance, not looking at how many are in the choir.

So just go for it!

A. Yes, you can. We aim to make this as easy as possible for you.  The important thing  is to be able to perform and also hear other musicians. This can only

develop your ensembles.

If you are happy to use your own cd player you’re welcome to bring it along, if that’s what the students are familiar with and it makes them feel comfortable

in their performance, then use it.

While the house p.a. is there,  hearing  the backing  and getting the balance can be a daunting thing  in new surroundings. It’s your choice.
